Tireless City

Upon returning to New York after 50 years in California, I was immediately taken by the liveliness both on the streets and below ground every day. New York vibrates with its own thrum: a blur of yellow cabs, delivery cyclists and roller skaters; or the sharper, more clearly stated exuberance of social dancers, striking actors, and table-tennis warriors.

I set out to capture this dynamism, relying on the blur of intentional camera movement or more sharply focused images. I hope that through the photographs, the viewer feels a sense of intimacy with the vitality of the city. Everywhere I look, it’s impossible to escape the constant pulse of New York, a kind of incessant heartbeat embedded deep inside the boroughs. The energy in these images suggests a metropolis that never seems to run out of gas. New York is a Tireless City.
