Some of the pieces in this exhibition are based on Ecclesiastes, an ongoing project of the artist inspired by the book of the Bible of the same name.
The artist recalls being struck by the “strangeness” and “beauty” of the words when it was read to her as a child. “It did not sound like the rest of the Bible. I have always felt a kinship with the writer and, over time, have developed a sense of artistic ownership over the material.”
In all her work, Sears aims to create a sense of magic and mystery. “These qualities alone make life bearable but they are scarce in ordinary existence; hence I prefer fantasy and dreams over daily life, and pour a yearning for magic into my work.”
Originally from St. Louis, Sears received a Master of Arts degree at Arkansas State University where she studied printmaking under engraver Evan Lindquist. She moved to New York City in 1980, planning to say three weeks.
Sarah has had one-person exhibitions in New York at Associated American Artists, the National Arts Club, and the American Gallery. She is a board member of the New York Society of Etchers. Her work can be found in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian Museum, the Vivian and Gordon Gilkey Center for the Graphic Arts, and a number of private collections.
Sarah is represented by the Old Print Shop in New York City.
